Scrap market manufacturers

Buyers must prioritize purity levels and material classification. For non-ferrous metals like copper, ensure it meets Grade 1 (Berry/Candy) standards for high purity. For ferrous scrap, verify the HMS 1 & 2 (Heavy Melting Steel) ratio, typically 80:20, to ensure melting efficiency. Additionally, check for moisture content and impurity tolerances (non-metallic inclusions), which should generally not exceed 0.5% to 1% to avoid yield loss.

Compliance is critical to avoid legal issues. Suppliers should adhere to ISRI (Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries) specifications for grade definitions. For cross-border shipments, ensure the supplier provides a Pre-Shipment Inspection Certificate (PSIC) to verify the absence of radioactive contaminants and explosive materials. Furthermore, verify compliance with ISO 9001 for quality management and ISO 14001 for environmental safety.

Due to the nature of the product, third-party inspections by agencies like SGS or CCIC are essential. These inspections should occur at the loading port to verify weight (via weighbridge tickets) and material composition. Requesting a chemical analysis report (Spectrometer test) for high-value scraps like stainless steel or brass is highly recommended to confirm alloying elements.

Pricing is usually indexed to global markets like the LME (London Metal Exchange). Buyers should look for formula-based pricing (e.g., LME minus a percentage) rather than fixed prices to stay competitive. Consider the recovery rate (yield); lower-priced scrap with high impurities often results in a higher Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) due to processing losses and increased energy consumption during smelting.

The most significant risks include weight discrepancies and material substitution (e.g., placing heavy stones or low-value waste in the center of a container). To mitigate this, use Trade Assurance services and never agree to 100% T/T advance payment. Utilize Letters of Credit (L/C at sight) to ensure payment is only released upon presentation of valid shipping and inspection documents.

Many countries have strict import quotas and Green Fence policies regarding solid waste. Ensure the supplier is a registered exporter with the destination country's customs (e.g., AQSIQ registration for China-bound goods). Always confirm that the specific HS Code for the scrap is not on the 'prohibited' list of the importing nation to avoid customs seizure or forced return shipments.

Focus on long-term contract stability rather than one-off spot deals. Suppliers prefer buyers who can provide consistent volume. Negotiate for transparency in the loading process, such as requesting live video feeds or photos of the container sealing process. For new suppliers found on Made-in-China.com, prioritize those with Audited Supplier status to ensure they have physical yards and processing facilities.

Scrap metal is dense and heavy; therefore, container weight limits must be strictly observed to avoid fines. Use 20-foot containers for heavy scrap to maximize weight capacity without exceeding structural limits. Ensure the Bill of Lading (B/L) clearly states the 'Clean' status of the scrap and confirm that the shipping line accepts heavy-duty industrial cargo to prevent delays at the transshipment port.
