Tatami fabric manufacturers

Selecting the right Tatami fabric requires balancing traditional aesthetics with modern durability. For high-traffic areas, prioritize synthetic Igusa (polypropylene or paper-based) which offers superior stain resistance and colorfastness compared to natural rush grass. Ensure the fabric weight is at least 600-800g/sqm to guarantee structural integrity. If sourcing for the hospitality industry, verify that the material has undergone anti-mildew and anti-bacterial treatments, as natural fibers are prone to moisture absorption.

Buyers must ensure the fabric meets ISO 12947-2 (Martindale Abrasion Test) with a rating of at least 20,000 rubs for durability. For international markets, compliance with REACH or OEKO-TEX Standard 100 is essential to ensure the absence of harmful chemicals like formaldehyde. If the fabric is intended for floor mats or wall coverings in public spaces, it must adhere to fire retardancy standards such as BS 5852 or NFPA 701.

To optimize costs, calculate the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), including shipping volume, as Tatami rolls can be bulky. Seek suppliers on Made-in-China.com that offer tiered pricing, where bulk orders exceeding 500 meters can yield discounts of 20-30%. Additionally, consider width customization (e.g., 1.5m vs 2.0m) to minimize cutting waste during installation, which can reduce material costs by up to 15%.

Maintenance depends on the fiber type. Natural rush fabric requires low-humidity environments and regular ventilation to prevent mold. Synthetic Tatami fabric is much easier to maintain, requiring only neutral detergents and damp cloth wiping. For all types, avoid direct prolonged UV exposure to prevent fading, and ensure the backing material is breathable non-woven fabric to prevent moisture buildup underneath.

The biggest risk is moisture damage and mold growth during sea transit. Always insist that the supplier uses desiccant silica gel packs and vacuum-sealed plastic wrapping inside the woven bags or cartons. Furthermore, use Made-in-China.com's Secured Trading services to ensure that payment is only released after a third-party pre-shipment inspection (PSI) confirms the moisture content is below 12%.

When requesting custom patterns or textures, provide high-resolution CAD files or physical swatches. Negotiate for a low-cost prototype (sample) before mass production. Professional suppliers should offer OEM/ODM services with a sample lead time of 7-10 days. Ensure the contract specifies a color tolerance of Delta E < 2.0 to maintain brand consistency across different production batches.

Tatami fabric is often classified under HS Code 5805 (Hand-woven tapestries) or 4601 (Plaiting materials); verify the specific code with your customs broker to avoid anti-dumping duties. Because rolls are long, LCL (Less than Container Load) shipping may incur 'overlength' surcharges. It is often more economical to consolidate orders into a 20GP container to protect the rolls from being crushed by other heavy cargo.
